Is it halal? The chains, answered honestly.
“Is Popeyes halal?” is one of the most-Googled halal questions in Canada — and the answers online are usually outdated or wrong. Here's the current status of every major chain based on official claims, community consensus, and our own visits where we've been — plus what to ask at the counter when it depends on the location. Statuses change; always confirm with your specific location.
Is A&W halal?
NoNo. A&W Canada holds no halal certification and runs no halal program — its grass-fed and hormone-free sourcing claims say nothing about slaughter method. Occasional location-level claims circulate but lack verification, so the community consensus is: not halal.
Is bb.q Chicken halal?
DependsAs a chain, no. bb.q Chicken's Canadian corporate position is that it does not operate a halal program. What exists is franchise-level: a handful of independently owned GTA locations source halal chicken on their own, including the one on our list, which we confirmed on our visit. So the honest answer is per-store, and you cannot assume the next bb.q you walk into matches.
Is Burger Factory halal?
YesYes. Burger Factory states its burgers are made with 100% fresh, locally sourced halal beef, and the chain operates as a halal concept across its locations. The location on our list sits at No. 11 with a Solid verdict.
Is Burger King halal?
NoNo. Burger King does not use halal-certified suppliers in Canada and holds no halal certification for its Canadian restaurants. The beef and chicken come through conventional supply chains, and pork is on the menu, so cross-contact applies on top of the sourcing question.
Is Chick-fil-A halal?
NoNo. Chick-fil-A does not certify or advertise its chicken as halal in Canada, and the Canadian restaurants run on the same North American supply chain as the US. With the chain expanding across the GTA, this comes up a lot — but nothing about the Toronto locations changes the sourcing answer.
Is Chipotle halal?
NoNo. Chipotle does not offer halal meat at its Canadian locations and holds no halal certification in Canada. The chicken, steak, barbacoa and carnitas all come through conventional supply chains, and carnitas is pork, so it's on the same line as everything else.
Is Church's Texas Chicken halal?
MostlyIn Ontario, mostly yes. Church's Texas Chicken locations across Ontario have told customers their chicken is halal, several stores keep certificates on file, and the location on our list was confirmed halal on our visit. The gap: Church's Canadian head office publishes nothing about halal, so this is store-level confirmation rather than a chain-wide policy you can point to.
Is Dave's Hot Chicken halal?
YesIn Canada, yes. Dave's Hot Chicken's own Canadian location pages state that their restaurants serve halal chicken, and the GTA locations we've eaten at confirmed it. The chain doesn't publish a certifying body, so if you need certificate-level assurance rather than a corporate statement, ask at the counter.
Is Domino's halal?
NoMostly no. Domino's Canada has no halal certification program — halal Domino's in other countries runs on different supply chains. A few individual Canadian franchisees have independently sourced halal chicken toppings, but shared ovens with pork pepperoni remain, so verify any store's claim directly.
Is Eggstatic halal?
YesYes. Eggstatic states its menu is fully halal-certified, with every meat sourced and prepared to ISNA halal standards — beef bacon and halal sausage instead of pork. The location on our list earned a Hit at No. 60.
Is Five Guys halal?
NoNo. Five Guys does not use halal beef outside its Middle East stores, and the company has stated as much directly on its website and social channels. Bacon is also a menu staple, so the grill is a cross-contact issue on top of the sourcing.
Is Harvey's halal?
NoNo. Harvey's beef and chicken are not halal-certified, the chain runs no halal program, and no Harvey's location appears on the HMA's certified list. For a flame-grilled halal burger, you'll want a dedicated halal burger spot.
Is Jollibee halal?
NoNo. Jollibee's own FAQ states plainly that it does not guarantee any of its products to be halal, citing supplier variation, shared kitchen equipment, and certification requirements. That's a direct corporate statement, not an inference — which makes Jollibee one of the clearest answers on this page.
Is KFC halal?
MostlyIn Ontario, mostly yes. KFC switched most Ontario restaurants to halal-certified chicken in May 2024 (Ottawa and Thunder Bay excluded at launch) and removed pork items, with supply from Zabiha Halal / Maple Lodge Farms. Outside Ontario it varies — and there's no national certification program, so check your location.
Is Little Caesars halal?
NoNo. Little Caesars is not halal-certified in Canada, and the pepperoni and sausage are pork-based. The cheese pizza is a different question: the dough is vegetarian and the cheese blend uses microbial rather than animal rennet — but it's made in a kitchen where pork toppings are handled constantly.
Is Mary Brown's halal?
DependsAt select locations, yes. A number of Mary Brown's stores — including many in the GTA, plus locations in Calgary and Edmonton — serve halal-certified chicken, some carrying HMA certification. It is store-by-store, not chain-wide, so verify your location.
Is McDonald's halal?
NoNo. McDonald's Canada has confirmed that no menu items are halal-certified at any Canadian location. The company's only halal experiment in North America — two Dearborn, Michigan restaurants — ended in 2013 after a lawsuit, and it hasn't offered halal anywhere in Canada or the US since.
Is Nando's halal?
MostlyIn Ontario, the chicken is halal — Nando's has told customers repeatedly that all its Ontario restaurants serve halal chicken. Two caveats keep this off our 'fully halal' shelf: Nando's Canada does not market itself as halal-certified and names no certifying body, and many locations are licensed and serve beer and wine. Outside Ontario it varies by province.
Is Osmow's halal?
YesYes — Osmow's chicken and beef are halal, with locations certified through ISNA and the company stating its meat is hand-slaughtered. Worth knowing: a 2024 CBC investigation found an expired certificate and conflicting staff answers at one location, so the community advice is to glance at the certificate where you order.
Is Pizza Pizza halal?
DependsPartially. Participating Pizza Pizza locations offer halal-certified chicken toppings and wings, and a few stores go further with halal pepperoni and beef. It is not a halal kitchen: standard meat toppings aren't halal and prep is shared. Ask your store what it carries.
Is Popeyes halal?
MostlyMostly yes. Popeyes chicken in Canada is certified halal by IFANCC, and Toronto-area locations have served halal chicken for well over a decade. Certification is at the supplier level and standards vary by certifier, so check the certificate at your location if the details matter to you.
Is Shake Shack halal?
NoNot as a restaurant. Community reporting from Shake Shack's Toronto launch indicates the beef comes from a halal-certified supplier, and that claim has circulated widely. Even taking it at face value: bacon is on the menu, alcohol is served, the beef hot dogs are explicitly not halal, and it is not a halal kitchen. Shake Shack Canada itself publishes nothing about halal.
Is Starbucks halal?
NoNot certified. Starbucks Canada holds no halal certification, so nothing on the menu is formally verified. In practice most beverages are permissible by ingredient — coffee, tea, and standard milk-based drinks — while the food case is the real issue, since it includes pork items handled and heated in the same ovens.
Is Subway halal?
NoAlmost always no. Subway Canada has confirmed halal is not a national policy — each franchise decides — and genuinely halal locations are rare (a few reported in the GTA and Calgary). Unlike the UK's formal halal program, Canada has no list and no standard. Assume not halal unless a store proves otherwise.
Is Swiss Chalet halal?
NoAs a chain, no. Swiss Chalet's rotisserie chicken is not halal-certified and there is no halal program. A small number of individual locations have been reported by community sources to serve halal chicken — treat those as unverified until the specific store shows you certification.
Is Taco Bell halal?
NoNo. Taco Bell Canada holds no halal certification and its beef and chicken come through conventional supply chains, the same as in the US. The vegetarian items — bean burrito, cheese quesadilla, veggie bowls — are ingredient-wise fine, but they're assembled on the same line as the meat.
Is Tim Hortons halal?
NoNo. Tim Hortons has not pursued halal certification in Canada, and the chicken is not halal-certified. Shared fryers are the bigger practical issue — hash browns, wedges and chicken items go through the same oil, so even the non-meat fried items carry cross-contact risk. If a specific location tells you it's halal, ask to see a current certificate before taking it at face value.
Is Wendy's halal?
DependsChicken only, at select GTA locations. In May 2026 Wendy's Canada announced halal-certified chicken (nuggets, strips, sandwiches) at ~30 GTA restaurants. Beef is not halal, kitchens still handle bacon, and the HMA has said it does not certify any Wendy's location — so read the details before deciding.
Is Wingstop halal?
MostlyAt Canadian locations, mostly yes — Wingstop Canada is widely reported to source halal chicken, and the location on our list was confirmed halal on our visit. What's missing is a primary source: Wingstop's Canadian site says nothing about halal, no certifying body is named, and online sources contradict each other. Treat it as strong community consensus, not a certificate, and confirm at your store.
How these answers work
How do you decide whether a chain is halal?
We research each chain's official halal claims, certification history, community consensus, and franchise structure — and where the Hit List has visited a chain, we note what we found on our visit. Statuses change, so answers are reviewed and re-dated, and we always recommend confirming with the specific location.
Why do answers vary by location for some chains?
Most large chains in Canada are franchise systems where each operator chooses its own meat suppliers. That is why chains like Popeyes or Mary Brown's can be halal in much of the GTA but not elsewhere — and why we always recommend asking to see a current halal certificate at the specific store.
What counts as proper halal verification at a chain?
A current, dated halal certificate from a recognized certifier, naming that location or its supplier. A verbal "yes, it's halal" without paperwork is not verification. Fully halal independent restaurants — like the ones on the Hit List — remove the guesswork entirely.
