Why this exists

Finding genuinely good halal food in Toronto shouldn't require scrolling through fifty Reddit threads, decoding cryptic Google reviews, and phoning the restaurant to ask “is it actually halal?” — and then still not being sure.

The two questions a halal diner actually has are almost never answered in the same place. Restaurant directories tell you a place is halal but not whether the food is any good. Food blogs tell you the food is good but treat halal status as a checkbox someone once ticked. Both problems come from the same root cause: nobody went.

So the rule here is that somebody goes. Every restaurant on this site was eaten at, paid for out of pocket, photographed, and asked directly about its halal supply chain at the counter. If we haven't been, it isn't on the list.

Who writes it

The Halal Hit List is written and published by one person — its founder, who writes under the pen name Sami Karim. The pen name is there for a practical reason: a reviewer who can be recognised at the door gets a different meal from the one you would get. It is not there to hide behind. The site is independently owned and operated from Toronto, Ontario, and you can reach the person behind it directly on the contact page.

There is no editorial team, no contributor network, and no syndicated content. That is a limit as much as a credential — it means the list grows at the speed of one person eating, which is why it is 156 restaurants and not five thousand.

How a verdict is reached

Every spot gets one of five verdicts — Hit, Solid, Decent, Borderline, or Miss — from a composite score weighted 60% taste, 20% value, 15% consistency, 5% cleanliness. Halal status is classified separately, on a four-tier scale that distinguishes hand-slaughtered from machine-slaughtered and fully halal kitchens from halal options, because that distinction matters to some readers and not others.

Of the 156 restaurants ranked so far, 47 are Hits and 109 are not. The ones that aren't stay published. A guide where everything is recommended is not a guide.

How this is funded

The site is supported by display advertising. It is not supported by restaurants. Specifically:

• No paid placements. A position on the Hit List cannot be bought, and no restaurant has ever paid to appear, move up, or be removed.
• No sponsored reviews. We don't take payment for a positive verdict, and scores are not softened to keep anyone happy.
• Advertising is separate from editorial. Ads on this site are bought programmatically through ad networks. The advertiser has no visibility into, or influence over, what gets ranked where — and we have no way to sell them that even if we wanted to.

Corrections

Halal status is a moving target. Suppliers change, owners sell, and a certificate on the wall in March can be gone by September. Everything on this site reflects what was true on the visit. If you know something here is out of date, please tell us — corrections to a halal status are the one thing we drop everything for, and we re-verify in person before changing a listing.
