The Halal Hit List
Chains, answered honestly

Is A&W halal?

Not halal in Canada

No. A&W Canada holds no halal certification and runs no halal program — its grass-fed and hormone-free sourcing claims say nothing about slaughter method. Occasional location-level claims circulate but lack verification, so the community consensus is: not halal.

Last reviewed 2026-07 · Chain status can change with suppliers — when in doubt, ask to see a current halal certificate.

No — A&W in Canada is not halal. And this page exists partly to kill a specific confusion.

Grass-fed ≠ halal

A&W's whole brand is wholesome sourcing: grass-fed beef, chicken raised without antibiotics, eggs from vegetarian-fed hens. That halo makes people assume halal-adjacency. It isn't. Halal is about slaughter and handling, not diet or hormones — and A&W Canada makes zero halal claims because none of its supply is halal-certified.

Two more sources of confusion worth naming:

  • Singapore. A&W there is MUIS-certified halal. Different market, different supply chain, zero relevance to Canada.
  • Location rumors. Claims about individual halal A&W locations circulate in community groups from time to time; none we're aware of are backed by verifiable certification. If a location claims halal, apply the standard test — current, dated certificate — before believing it.

Is A&W halal? — FAQs

Is A&W halal in Canada?

No. A&W Canada is not halal-certified and has no halal program. Community sources overwhelmingly agree; occasional claims about individual locations circulate online but lack verifiable certification. (A&W in Singapore is MUIS-certified — that has nothing to do with Canadian restaurants.)

Does grass-fed or hormone-free mean halal?

No. Grass-fed, organic, and hormone-free describe how the animal was raised; halal depends on how it was slaughtered and handled. A&W's sourcing marketing makes no halal claim, and none of its Canadian supply is halal-certified.

Is the A&W veggie burger halal-friendly?

It isn't halal-certified, and it's cooked in kitchens that also prepare bacon and non-halal meat on shared equipment. Some diners accept meat-free items under their own standard; stricter diners don't. A&W itself claims nothing.
