Is Osmow's halal?

Halal chicken and beef — with caveats worth knowing

Yes — Osmow's chicken and beef are halal, with locations certified through ISNA and the company stating its meat is hand-slaughtered. Worth knowing: a 2024 CBC investigation found an expired certificate and conflicting staff answers at one location, so the community advice is to glance at the certificate where you order.

Last reviewed 2026-07 · Chain status can change with suppliers — when in doubt, ask to see a current halal certificate.

Osmow's is the default halal shawarma chain in Ontario, and the community consensus backs it: the chicken and beef are halal.

What the record shows

Osmow's locations are commonly certified through ISNA, and the company states its meat is hand-slaughtered from certified suppliers. Halal directories across Canada list Osmow's locations, and it's been a community staple for years. We've also eaten there for the Hit List — halal status checked during our visit to the location on our list.

The caveats, honestly stated:

  • CBC Marketplace's 2024 investigation found an expired certificate at one Osmow's location, and staff at another gave the wrong slaughter method (the supplier and certifier confirmed hand-slaughtered; the staffer said machine). Corporate reaffirmed hand-slaughtered meat in response.
  • Franchise systems drift. The chain-level answer is yes; the location-level answer is "look at the certificate on the wall."

But is it good?

Here's where we differ from the certificate: the Osmow's we visited earned a Miss — No. 108 on the Hit List. Halal? Yes. The best shawarma available? Not on our scoreboard — see the independent spots below that out-scored it.

Is Osmow's halal? — FAQs

Is Osmow's halal?

Yes — Osmow's chicken and beef are halal. Locations are commonly certified through ISNA, and the company has stated its meat is hand-slaughtered and sourced from certified suppliers. As with any franchise, individual locations can lapse — a 2024 CBC investigation found an expired certificate at one — so checking the displayed certificate is reasonable diligence.

What did the CBC Marketplace investigation find at Osmow's?

At one location, CBC Marketplace (2024) was told the meat was machine-slaughtered and shown a supplier certificate — but the supplier and certifier both confirmed the halal chicken involved is hand-slaughtered. Osmow's corporate responded that all its meat is hand-slaughtered. The takeaway: the meat's status held up, but counter-level information can be wrong in both directions.

Is Osmow's any good?

Halal, yes — but on food, the location we visited (Collingwood) landed near the bottom of our scale with a Miss verdict at No. 108 on the Hit List. Halal status and food quality are separate questions; see our review and the shawarma spots that out-scored it.
